  Answer Hi Bob,

I will absolutely second what Samuel said – simply excellent photography, plus great advice always!

I came across your site on BetterPhoto (I am too a member of this community of photographers and friends) and I want to say that your work is truly inspiring. I very much enjoyed your Shades Of Gray gallery – very professional and with great sense of light, really great black and white work!

  Answer Hello Phillip,

Thanks for visiting and for your nice comments.

I took a few moments to peruse some of the fine-art works on your web site. It's a compliment to be recognized by a B&W artist of your caliber.
Your knowledge of light, shape, design, and use of filtration is truly remarkable in what I've seen.

I particularily liked "Clouds of Straw", "Fog Over Greystone Bay", and "Reflections, Connemara Lakes"
Truly great work!

Question

Thanks
Hi Bob!
I just wanted to thank you for all of the advice you have given me in the past!I have put my usual subject areas(landscapes, nature, etc.on the backburner for the time being!!As I have been asked to cover the little league baseball games in my area!!
Any suggestions on covering sporting events???

- Steve McCroskey 6/22/2005 9:03:44 AM

  Answer Hello Steve,
You will need a fast medium-telephoto..(around 200 mm) for action shots of the infielders and a longer lens to cover the guys in the outfield.
A medium wide-angle around 24-35 mm. will handle the team portraits nicely.
(If you're lucky, you already have a good zoom lens which will cover all those focal lengths.)
If it's a real sunny day, try to position yourself at a right angle to the sun. This will give your photos more depth than if the sun were directly in front of or behind you.

Choose at least 1/250 sec. or faster for action shots. (1/500 would probably work better.)

Good luck!

Question

Uploading images
Uploading Tiff's
I us a desk top computer with Xp. I use a 5 megapixel camera. Previuosly when I upload images, usually small to medium files a "wizard" would come up, let me view and select the ones I wanted...on a very rapid basis.

Since taking BP classes I now have been shooting at Super Fine and and High Quality which makes Tiff's files in the 14.2 MB(appx) file size..BUT. the wizard no longer opens up and instaed I have to "go thru a DCIM / 100 Minlta file (which I think is from my camera)on my temorary e: drive which does two things DIFFERENTLY...

it now takes a long time and each images now for some reason has 2 files icons, one for THM at about 2.2 KB and an image icon of 14.2 MB.....WHAT is the THM for, does that always stay with the other matching image icon (ie when I go to PS or print or ?/) and how can I get these to upload faster, go back to the Wizard etc etc like it used to be with the much small images files........ OR IS THIS ALL NORMAL with the now bigger tiff's files.

I am curious if I am doing something wrong, it my computer wrong, or does the fact that the images are now "tiff" size (??) make this slower, more confusing, and done in a different way the norm.

I hope one of you computer guys with knowledge can help me out.... I do not want to go back to small images becuase I need the bigger size for 11 x 14 files I am printing for marketing and gifts in my real estate business.....and I would like to stay with the larger files.....but this time wiating and no longer using the wizard bother's and confuses me... Help. Daryl

Question

Shooting with Film
Dear Bob,
I purchased a minolta dimage slide/negative scanner. It came with Photoshop Elements 2.0. Although I did shoot a few rolls of slide film, I've yet to discover the secret of how you're geeting such clarity and color. Do you share any tricks of the trade? Could I be missing something in scanning slides? Perhaps I'm using an inferior camera lens. I maintain an inexpensive gallery on betterphoto. I've entered a number of photos in the contests but have yet to "score". So many are departing from film based photography. You remain an inspiration. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Appreciate your work,
Dwight Dolby

Question

Great Gallery !
Bob, I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your gallery. You're a very talented photographer. It's also nice to see someone on Betterphoto that I have so many interests in common with.I have been breeding snakes for 15 years.Loved the Rattler photos.I am an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer.Would like to shoot and write for fly fisherman.I've been tying since I was 12 and have many of my own creations.I fished shad on the Delaware river and Salmon,Steelhead on the Salmon river.I'm also an avid Musky fisherman and have a 40 incher hanging on my wall.I'm interested in setting up a site with Betterphoto and hoping to do so soon. You can view some of my work at RobValine.Imageculture.com That site is full to capacity at this point in time.(Maximum 400 images.)I'm a 2001 Graduate of New York Institute of Photography.I live in Southeastern Pennsylvania. If you would ever like to shoot or do some fly fishing in Pa.,Let me know.I know some great spots.I'm also open to joint writing projects about Fly Fishing if you would be interested in anything like that. I have photos of flies that I created. If you would like to see them,I could e-mail them.Let me know.

  Answer Hello Rob,
Thanks for visiting my site and for your nice comments.
BP is a good meeting place, as well as a great place to just “hang out”.

I’m glad you appreciated my rattler photos. These are fascinating creatures, and I thoroughly enjoy pursuing them,…(from a respectable distance,…of course).

It’s also nice to meet a fellow angler. I’ve been to South-Central PA many times on trout fishing ventures to the “Breeches”, Conewago Creek and other, lesser-known streams in search of trophy browns. Lately though, I’ve been fishing.. (and photographing) closer to my home in Maryland.
Last fall, I went to the Salmon River…(two trips), to photograph the king salmon and brown trout/steelhead runs for a possible magazine article, but was disappointed,…(lots of guys fishing, but few fish caught.)
I did a little fishing while I was there and managed to catch a 14 lb. Silver salmon on a 6lb test spinning outfit,…which was fun. Unfortunately,…that was the highlight of BOTH trips.

I checked out your web site. I like the snake photos a lot! Some of the species you’ve photographed, I have been searching for in the wild but have been unsuccessful in finding them…(like a corn snake,…there not real populous around here.)

My schedule is pretty tight, but if you want to try to hook up for a fishing trip, use the Contact Link on this site to get in touch.

- Bob C.  11/2/2004 5:53:53 PM

Answer Bob,I just wanted to mention that you might want to be careful about Native Species in Maryland. You need permits from the state in order to keep Native Species as pets or for breeding.I know a friend of mine had some problems at one of the reptile shows in Maryland about corn snakes. He did'nt know that you need permits to bring captive bred babies in from out of state.I guess you need the permits to have them in your possession at all.I'm not sure who issues them.It may be the fish and game commission. If you don't already have a permit,You may want to give them a call to check it out.Better safe than sorry.I also have Coastal Plains Milk snakes which are Native to Maryland. Also Very hard to find.I made a few trips there myself looking for these.A quick tip for finding snakes.Go out after a hurricane or heavy rain.A lot of snakes stay underground in rodent burrows and only come out at night.A heavy rain will bring them up to the surface. Thanks for the comments on my web site. Also,I wanted to mention about the Salmon river.Timing is everything up there. It can be hit or miss. One week can be great and the next terrible.A lot depends on the weather too.I hav'nt been up for quite a while. But,really enjoyed the trips.Iwas up once in the spring and once in the fall. The fall trip was more productive.I landed 3 kings on a fly rod that went about 20 lbs.Lost a real nice steelhead that was probably about 8 lbs.He almost took the rod right out of my hands he hit so hard.Stripped about 50 yards and 1 jump and he was gone.Broke off.I went from 8 to 10 to 12 lb tippets because of all the breakoffs.Must've broke off about 15 fish.Although I had less hook ups,the 12 lb tippets seemed to hold the fish better. The only rod I used was a fly rod.I think I outfished the guys I was with that were using spinning rods by at least 3 to 1.I had a lot more hookups for sure.I got the better drift. My brother had a few on spinning gear.Egg Flies and Comets was the killers for me.Did you ever go for stripers? There should be some good spots for stripers in maryland. What kind of photo equipment are you using? You're stuff looks great! Send me an e-mail if you have time.Talk to you later.
