Foetidus of Fire
Symplocarpus foetidus (a.k.a. skunk cabbage) is unique in that its bulb actually produces heat. This process helps to melt the snow and ice around it allowing this hardy plant to be among the first to push through the soil each spring. A red-filtered flash unit was positioned behind the plant to suggest that a fire burns from within. (Nikkor 55 mm, Vivitar 285 Flash (filtered), Provia 100) Return to Article Comment on Photo
